Layne Smith ’20 is an English and Global Politics double major, with a focus in rhetoric and nuclear strategy, and a native Texan by way of Westchester, New York. As General Secretary for Mock Con, she is responsible for the internal logistics and communication of the organization. If not emailing, she can be found listening to the Bon Appétit podcast, making Spotify playlists, or going to yoga.

The second episode of MockCast season two features host Layne Smith and Operations Chair Kylie Piotte. The two talk about the role of the Operations Department and the upcoming events that will define Mock Con 2020.

Kylie Piotte ‘21 serves as Mock Convention’s Director of Operations. In her role, she manages the events, logistics, memorabilia, security, and accommodations aspects of Mock Con 2020. She is a Business Administration and American Politics double major with a strong interest in American History and the Spanish language. When she isn’t coordinating bus schedules for Convention Weekend, she can be found baking for her dairy free cooking blog, The Dairy Queen.

Episode 1 | General Chair Jimmy Fleck

In the very first episode, General Secretary and MockCast Host Layne Smith talks with General Chair Jimmy Fleck about his role and the direction of the 2020 cycle.

Jimmy Fleck, General Chair

Jimmy is a senior from St. Charles, Illinois studying global politics and business administration. As General Chair he oversees the entire Mock Con organization, and enjoys getting to meet new people in that role. This past summer he worked in Washington D.C. researching healthcare policy. Formerly he was on the W&L Mock Trial team and helped restart the W&L club baseball program.

 

Episode 2 | Political Chair John Harashinski

Political Chair John Harashinski ’20 discuss his role and the day-to-day operations and research of the Political Team.

John Harashinski, Political Chair

John is a senior from Barnegat Township, New Jersey, studying American Politics and Education Policy. As Political Chair, John oversees the entire predictive arm of Mock Convention, ensuring accuracy for the platform, speakers list, and the overall nomination by leading a team ofundergraduate student analysts. Over the summer, John interned for the political strategy firm, Public Opinion Strategies in Alexandria, VA, and hopes to return to the field of political consulting after graduation. He also has experience on Capitol Hill and in South Africanlegislative politics. When not pouring over the latest polls, John can be found doing live play-by-play commentary for the W&L baseball team or hosting his classic rock, Bruce Springsteen-focused, radio show.

MockCast returns for Season 2. In this episode, host Layne Smith talks with Financial Chair Elizabeth Thompson about the inner-workings of funding the 2020 Convention.

Elizabeth Thompson, Financial Chair

Elizabeth Thompson is a senior neuroscience major at Washington and Lee. She currently serves as the Financial Chair for Mock Convention 2020. Nicknamed ET, she also is a member of the University Singers and, in conjunction with her major, passionately explores the connection between music and the brain.
