Name: Mike Huckabee

Previous Experience: Mike Huckabee was Governor of Arkansas from 1996 until 2007, becoming one of the longest serving Governors in the state’s history. Before that he was Lieutenant Governor for three years. Huckabee is also a New York Timesbestselling author, former FOX news host and a longtime radio commentator. Huckabee was a candidate for the Republican nomination in 2008.

Signature Issue: FairTax. Huckabee is a champion of tax reform and wants to broaden the tax base, which he claims will bring back trillions of dollars in offshore investment and manufacturing back to the United States, and help protect Medicaid and Medicare. As a former Baptist pastor, Huckabee is also known for having a strong voter base of Christian conservatives.

Opportunities: If Huckabee finds success in the caucuses and a win in South Carolina, it could make him a formidable candidate when the evangelical-heavy Southern states hold primaries. He had success in 2008 and if he can expand his evangelical base to blue-collar conservatives, he could surprise.

Challenges: His success in 2008 may not translate to 2016. With so many options, conservatives who like him as a media personality may have moved on to other candidates.
