Name: John Kasich

Previous Experience: John Kasich is the current governor of Ohio. Before being elected governor in 2010, Kasich was a member of the House of Representatives from 1983 – 2001 where he served as Chairman of the House Budget Committee, and was a member of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee. Before that he was a member of the Ohio Senate, and managing director of Lehman Brothers’ Columbus Ohio office. He was also a FOX News commentator on his show Heartland with John Kasich from 2001 – 2007.

Signature Issue: Budget. Kasich has a strong background in budgeting as former Chair of the House Budget Committee.  He has also unapologetically stood by his expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.

Opportunities: He has a resume full of experience in a pivotal swing state.  New Hampshire will be the most important for him early on, and he needs to do well there to be a serious contender in the race.

Challenges: Republicans probably don’t want to elect someone who, in the view of the party, helped bring about Obamacare. His tendencies to over-share may also come back to hurt him with regards to attack adds and the media.

Did You Know? Raised a Catholic, Kasich came to re-embrace religion and the Anglican faith as an adult after both his parents were killed in a car crash by a drunk driver.
